Thomas Haly of Vancouver recently became $50,000 richer playing one of Washington's Lottery newest Scratch games, Liberty Bills. "I was dumbfounded at first. It's all kind of surreal," he told Lottery officials when he claimed his prize just hours after realizing he was a winner on July 8.
After he pays off some bills, Haly plans to treat his family to a summer vacation. He says he'll let the family take a vote to decide where. He also said he'll donate a portion of his winnings to charity.
Haly is a long-time Washington's Lottery player. He says he doesn't have any good luck charms, but he does favor odd numbers when he's playing. He has won prizes in amounts of $25, $50 and $500 in the past, making this his first big win.
The Vancouver area has had several big winners in recent months. In fact, Haly is the tenth Washington's Lottery player to claim $30,000 or more from the Vancouver Regional Office since March 2014.
Proceeds from Washington's Lottery benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, providing scholarships to college students statewide. To learn more about Washington's Lottery, its beneficiaries and to review all up-to-date winning numbers, please visit walottery.com.
