Elma High School Teacher Wins $3.6 Million Lotto Jackpot
Lucky winners have played the same numbers for nearly 30 years and plan to give part of their win to Relay for Life.
OLYMPIA: Roger and Darla Sauer are Washington’s newest millionaires. The Aberdeen couple has played the same Lotto numbers since the game started, and the numbers finally paid off with a $3.6 million win on Thursday. "We chose our numbers from a mix of birthdays," explained Roger. "Seven, eight, 12, 19, 29 and 38 are definitely lucky numbers for us now!"
Roger is a high school English teacher at Elma High School and Darla works at the Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center. "I was a meat cutter for 30 years," Roger shared. "I went back to college in 2000 and have been an English teacher ever since."
Darla and Roger found out about their big win on Thursday when Roger scanned his ticket at a gas station on his way home. "We came right in to claim our prize after we found out we won," Darla said. They hadn’t even told their kids at the time they claimed their big win. Their plan was to simply send text messages to their four kids and wait for the calls to come in.
The couple has some big plans for their $3.6 million. "We bought some land a few years ago, so we'll start building our house sooner than expected," said Roger. "Also, my wife does a lot of work with the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life, so we’ll definitely donate part of our win to that great organization."
Roger and Darla purchased their winning ticket at the 7-Eleven on Olympic Highway in Aberdeen last week. The store will receive a retail selling bonus of $36,000.
