Everett woman inspired by her mother unknowingly selects winning numbers for five lottery tickets in one night; wins $50,000

K.L. used her and her mother’s birthdays as her numbers for five Match 4 tickets, winning the top prize of $10,000 per ticket

Olympia, Wash. (January 29, 2024) – For years, K.L. from Everett has played Match 4 from Washington’s Lottery, and when she plays, she always picks numbers that have a personal meaning. Earlier this month K.L. was reminiscing on fond memories of her mother while looking through old photos, so when she purchased her weekly Match 4 tickets, she combined her and her mother’s birthdays as her numbers of choice. Little did K.L. know that this inspiration would lead her to win the top prize on all five of those tickets on yet another sentimental day: her mother’s wedding anniversary.

That next morning, K.L. used the Washington’s Lottery app to check the winning Match 4 numbers. She was ecstatic to see that because she selected the same numbers for all five tickets, she won the $10,000 top prize for each one, totaling a $50,000 win. She immediately shared the news with her husband who was so shocked by the coincidence that he was left speechless.

K.L. plans to donate some of her winnings to local non-profit organizations and animal charities.

Match 4 is a daily draw game from Washington’s Lottery. Each play is $2. Players pick four numbers between one and 24. Alternatively, players may use Quick Pick by letting the computer select their numbers. With three winning ball combinations, the more numbers that match those drawn, the more a player will win.

Making a Difference in Washington State

Since 1982, Washington’s Lottery has generated more than $5.0 billion to support several important state programs, including providing much-needed funds for the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account (WOPA). In FY22, WOPA received $176.6 million from the Lottery, enough to pay college tuition for more than 9,900 Washington residents. It also provided approximately 25% of the annual budget for the state’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program, which provides critical services to more than 15,000 children at 440 locations across Washington.

Washington’s Lottery Beneficiary Fact

Washington’s Lottery is very proud to be a financial supporter of the state’s Early Childhood Education & Assistance Program (ECEAP). The $40 million annual investment the lottery makes in ECEAP has lasting effects. Children who participate in ECEAP are more likely to be kindergarten-ready than non-participants, and those who participate five or more hours per day are especially prepared in reading and math.* Children in state-funded pre-K programs like ECEAP see long-lasting positive effects, including increased grade progression, high school graduation and college enrollment.**
