Washingtonians win big in FY24: more than $141 million in lottery prizes paid out in Q4 alone

From a pre-school teacher who received the gift of a lifetime following Teacher Appreciation Week in the form of a $200K Scratch prize, to a Seattleite who spontaneously changed their game of choice and won a $2 million Scratch prize, winner stories varied across the state this quarter

Olympia, Wash. (July 23, 2024) – Players from all over Washington become winners every day with Washington’s Lottery, and fiscal year 2024 was no exception. Throughout the year, the Lottery awarded nearly $560 million in prizes to more than 37 million winners across the state. The final quarter of FY24 (April-June 2024) was particularly exceptional, marking the end of another great year for Washingtonians and the Lottery. During this quarter, more than 9.1 million prizes were claimed by players, totaling an impressive $141.5 million, the year’s highest quarterly prize payout.

Throughout FY24, millions of prizes were claimed each quarter in Washington, including;

  • Q1: 9.6 million prizes claimed, totaling $141 million paid to winners
  • Q2: 9.4 million prizes claimed, totaling $136.8 million paid to winners
  • Q3: 9.4 million prizes claimed, totaling $140.5 million paid to winners
  • Q4: 9.1 million prizes claimed, totaling $141.5 million paid to winners

Some of the winners from each region for Q4 include:

  • North Puget Sound
    • For a Seattleite, a simple change in his routine led to an extraordinary outcome. Rather than buying his usual Draw game of choice, Powerball, he instead “splurged” on a $30 Chrome Scratch ticket that wound up being worth $2 million.
    • A Seattle man won the top prize of $500,000 playing 50X Cash Scratch and claimed his big win on his birthday.
    • J.C., an Edmonds preschool teacher, ended her Teacher Appreciation Week with the gift of a lifetime from Washington’s Lottery, a $200,000 Scratch prize. She plans to use her winnings to buy herself a new car and visit Ireland, the destination of her dreams.
    • Elvin, an Edmonds resident and business owner, has long dreamed of purchasing a new home for his family. His recent big win from a Match 4 ticket worth $10,000 is going to help him achieve that.
    • Alexandra from Camano Island won $30,000 playing Slingo Scratch. She plans on using her winnings to purchase a new car.
    • Laurenna from Everett purchased a Match 4 ticket and won $10,000.
    • Katherine from Sequim purchased an All About the Benjamins Scratch ticket and won the top prize of $50,000.
    • J.H. from Seattle purchased a Cash Stacks Scratch ticket and won the game’s top prize of $200,000.
  • Eastern Washington
    • J.H. from Newman Lake won $4.6 million after she purchased the sole Lotto jackpot winning ticket back in April.
    • M.L. purchased a Powerball ticket from Yoke’s Fresh Market in Spokane and won $200,000. He plans to gift some of his winnings to his granddaughter, who is about to graduate from college.   
    • T.L. from Othello won $10,000 playing 100X Cash Scratch, which is part of a new family of multiplier Scratch games from Washington’s Lottery that launched earlier this year.
    • C.B. from Richland purchased a Match 4 ticket and won a $10,000 prize, which they plan to use to repair their 22-year-old van.
    • Kathryn from Othello won $50,000 playing Loteria Scratch.
    • H.R. won $10,000 playing Match 4 and claimed their winnings at the Tri-Cities Regional Office.
  • Central Washington
    • A player from Moses Lake won $10,000 playing Match 4.
    • A woman from Toppenish purchased a Roll The Dice Scratch ticket and won the game’s top prize of $50,000.

Washington’s Lottery has regional offices located in Everett, Federal Way, Olympia, Spokane, Tri-Cities and Vancouver, which are open to the public to claim prizes Mon-Fri from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winners with tickets for $100,000 or more are instructed to call the nearest Lottery office to schedule an appointment to make a safe and secure in-person claim.

Who Benefits
Since 1982, Washington’s Lottery has generated more than $5.3 billion to support several important state programs, including providing much-needed funds for the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account (WOPA). In FY23, WOPA received $199.9 million from the Lottery. Of this, $139.1 million helped fund the Washington College Grant, a financial aid program that supported more than 29,000 college students and apprentices across the state last year. Another $2.5 million helped fund the College Bound program to help eligible students attain a college or training degree or credential.

Washington’s Lottery is proud to be a financial supporter of the Washington Student Achievement Council, which administers state financial aid programs. WSAC leads a variety of initiatives to increase educational opportunities for students, families, and educators across the state, with a particular focus on increasing equity by reaching communities of color and students from low-income families. The $141.6 million investment made in FY23 by the Lottery helps fund the Washington College Grant and College Bound programs, in order to improve access to postsecondary attainment for students across Washington.
